Though there was another angle too in this musical love triangle —Akshay Kumar as Ajay playing Madhuri’s childhood friend, the story mainly revolved around Rahul falling for Pooja, Nisha secretly in love with Rahul and Ajay admitting his feelings for Pooja, hence leading to a rather complicated love story. Dil To Pagal Hai ( DTPH) is a romance film through and through. It does not have any lofty social goals like Dil Se or Amar Akbar Anthony, nor does it try any drastically new approaches to film like Kaminey or Om Shanti Om. It is Shahrukh Khan’s second collaboration of many with director and producer Yash Chopra. In this film he plays Rahul, a director of a dance troupe who does not believe in soul mates or love.
This is challenged when he meets a girl, Pooja (played by Madhuri Dixit), who fits the role he created of some seemingly impossible dream girl, Maya. He sees her dance with all of her soul and recognizes immediately that she is meant for this part. Throughout the production of the play, Maya, they fall in love, but obviously, there are obstacles. Their love is complicated by the fact that Nisha, a member of the dance troupe loves Rahul and much moreso by the fact that Pooja is engaged to her life-long friend, Aijay.
Pooja eventually realizes that Aijay is not the one meant for her and, with his permission, finally tells Rahul how she really feels in a dramatic scene in front of a live audience. This film is master of the coincidence, even more than other films we have seen. Before Pooja and Rahul meet, she overhears him whistling a particular tune three different times: once in the changing room of a store, once when he comes to return the birthday cake for her uncle that he accidentally picked up, and once when he is simply walking down her street on Valentine’s Day after accidentally calling her phone number.
Pooja makes the connection to these times when she realizes when she realizes that he is the one who has been whistling all along all of these as a sign that they are soul mates. This supports the classic Bollywood theme that there is a right couple that will end up together in the end as we have seen in so many of the films that we have watched this semester. The conflict between love and obligation to the family, a common theme is also at play here. Much like Shilani in Dil Chahta Hai, Pooja knows that marrying Aijay, who is the son of the people who took her in when she was orphaned, would make her adopted parents extremely happy and she cannot stand to go against that once they know about the engagement.
We see this struggle in DDLJ also, a film that Shahrukh Khan did only 2 years before DTPH, when Simran cannot go against her family who has arranged a marriage. DTPH uses the traditionally unsophisticated sets of Bollywood, though it does do some location shot in Germany that hadn’t been done before. It also doesn’t seem to use camera angles in any new way. The film does seem to have more song sequences than many of the films we have seen, my favorite of which was Koi Ladki Hai:. Most of the songs are very catchy though. All in all, DTPH is a straight-forward, stereotypical Bollywood film about soul mates overcoming obstacles in order to be together, which I love!
