The size of the vmdk file is around 65 GB whereas the total size of the guest os is only 11GB. What am I missing here? But why is that the vmdk file is around 65GB? Having deleted all the unnecessary files in the Guest OS, the size of the vmdk should automatically decrease right?
There are a number of VMFS filesystem related tasks you can run using vmkfstools. Query a VMFS Volume. You can get information on a VMFS volume by running the following vmkfstools command: ~ # vmkfstools --queryfs -h /vmfs/volumes/NewVOL/ VMFS-3.54 file system spanning 1 partitions. The same steps can be used to shrink a Windows drive. With Vista/2008 and newer the disk manager can be used to change the size of the partitions instead of Gparted or Gparted can be used as well. It appears that VMware isn't able to do much to compact ext4-formatted drives. The solution is that you need to fill the drive with zeroes and then delete a file that you used to do that. So: sudo su cat /dev/zero > wipefile; rm -f wipefile shutdown -h now Basically, you become root, you create a file filled with zeroes and then you delete it and shutdown the machine.
I ran the above code a moment ago, and watched a few things as I did: • I suspected the vmdk file would grow to the size of the disk, but it didn't. It grew slightly, but not much. This was good because my host does not have space for the full vmdk file. • I suspected drive on the guest would fill up. I watched it with: while: do du -h sleep 2 done The guest disk started at about 15% full, then climbed to 100%, at which point the cat command failed and the wipefile was rm'ed, bringing it back to 15% full. I've seen a few posts that also say you should do this for /boot. Probably a good idea, but I don't think it's always necessary.
Once that's complete, go into the machine's settings > Hard Disk > Utilities > Compact., and you should be all good.
Using thin provisioned virtual disks can provide many benefits. Not only do they allow over-provisioning, but with the prevalence of flash storage, performance degradation really isn’t a concern like it used to be. I recently ran into a situation in my home lab where my Windows jump box ran out of disk space. I had downloaded a bunch of OVA and ISO files and had forgotten to move them over to a shared drive that I use for archiving.
I expanded the disk by 10GB to take it from 40GB to 50GB, and moved off all the large files. After this, I had about 26GB used and 23GB free – much better. Because that jump box is sitting on flash storage – which is limited in my lab – I had thin provisioned this VM to conserve as much disk space as possible. Despite freeing up lots of space, the VM’s VMDK was still consuming a lot more than 26GB. Notice below that doing a normal directory listing displays the maximum possible size of a thin disk. In this case, the disk has been expanded to 50GB: [root@esx0:/vmfs/volumes/58f77a6f-30961726-ac7e-002655e1b06c/jump] ls -lha total 49741856 drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3.0K Feb 12 21:50.
